Health Care During Pregnancy

Unless your health care provider advises you otherwise, sex during pregnancy is safe for you and the baby. The baby is protected by the amniotic fluid in the womb and by your abdomen. Some women with high-risk pregnancies are advised to avoid intercourse during pregnancy. Your health care provider will tell you if you have a high-risk pregnancy.

Getting early and regular prenatal care is one of the best ways to promote a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal care is more than just health care; it often includes education and counseling about how to handle different aspects of pregnancy, such as nutrition and physical activity, what to expect from the birth itself, and basic skills for caring for your infant.Prenatal visits also give you and your family a chance to talk to your health care provider about any questions or concerns you have related to your pregnancy, birth, or parenthood.

To improve the oral health of pregnant women and young children, the New York State Department of Health convened an expert panel to develop recommendations for assisting health care professionals. These recommendations can be used by: prenatal care providers to integrate oral health risk assessment and referral into routine prenatal care; oral health care professionals to provide appropriate treatment for pregnant women and young children.
