Benefits of Lap Band Surgery

With the increase in the obesity rate around the nation, most of the people are opting for the methods that help in getting rid of obesity in a short time. The treatments for obesity are basically of two types. They are surgical and non surgical methods. Non surgical methods include taking weight loss pills, following a perfect diet, exercising, etc. Surgical methods include lap band surgery, gastric bypass surgery, etc.

What is a lap band surgery?

Lap band surgery is a surgery that reduces the size of the stomach with the help of a lap band. This surgery is completely painless. It is a simple surgery where a lap band is tied at the upper part of the stomach. This band helps in creating a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach. This pouch helps in controlling the food intake levels of the person. This stomach band is made up of a silicone belt and a port connected by a tube. This port is placed beneath the skin in the upper part of the abdomen. The size of the pouch can be adjusted by introducing the saline into the connecting tube through the port. Inflation and deflation of the belt can be done by maintaining the levels of saline in the tube. This surgery involves the following steps.

Anesthesia is given to the patient so that he won’t experience any pain during the surgery.

Incisions are then made and the silicone belt of the lap band is fixed on the upper part of the stomach with the help of few sutures. This creates a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach. This pouch will be generally of volume 15cc.

The port is then placed underneath the skin of the abdomen. The port and the belt are connected with the help of a narrow tube. The size of the belt can be adjusted by introducing saline into the port.

This would last only for an hour.

How is this lap band surgery helpful in treating obesity?

Lap band surgery is found to be very effective in treating obesity in many cases. 8 out of 10 cases were found to be successful in reaching their desired weights. Once the surgery is done the patient has to follow a strict after surgery diet. This is the most crucial part of the treatment. If this diet is not followed then there is no use of the surgery. This diet is to ensure that the patient loses weight because of the controlled diet and the pouch helps in controlling the amounts of food consumed. This surgery helps the person lose weight by three ways. They are:

Limiting the amount of the food consumed

Reducing the appetite of the person

Slowing the process of digestion in the person

What are the benefits of the lap band surgery?

This surgery is generally preferred among the other because of its benefits. The benefits of this surgery are listed below.

There is no cutting or tearing of the stomach in this surgery. A simple and small incision is made with the help of a laparoscopic machine.

Stomach is not stapled like in that of gastric bypass surgery.

Patient hardly experiences any pain after the surgery because of the limited incisions and sutures.

The size of the pouch can be decided in this case. The band can be adjusted according to the decided size.

If the patient is not comfortable then the size can be adjusted even after the surgery with the help of the port that is placed underneath the skin of the abdomen. This can be done by maintaining the levels of saline in the tube.

The entire process is viewed by the doctors with the help of a laparoscopic camera. Hence very few sutures are required for this surgery.

This surgery is reversible and the band can be removed with the help of another small surgery.

This surgery hardly takes any time.

Patient need not stay in the hospital for a longer duration. He can leave after the surgery or may have to stay for an overnight.
