Working Out in Winters
August 7, 2009
Weather changes can play a very negative role and can toss your entire workout regime. Especially working out during winters can be an extremely daunting task.
Exercise not only helps us remain fit and build up our energy levels, it also helps to build our immune system which is extremely important in winters. Besides you won’t need to struggle to get into your swimming gear when summer arrives.
If you take care of the exercise gear and exercise right, winter workouts can be fun too. Once you have got a clean chit from your doctor you are ready to rock and roll.
Dress Right: Exercisers tend to warm themselves a lot while working out in winters, this will generate high amount of heat and once your sweat dries you become cold again. Avoid wearing extremely warm clothes. What you should do is dress up in layers of clothes. Wear a thin synthetic material top inside which absorbs sweat, and don’t wear cotton on your skin. Next layer should be of fleece, which helps in insulation. On the top wear something which is water resistant yet breathable. If you are blessed with a lean body you might need an extra layer of insulation, if the cold is too much for you and you are asthmatic cover your face as well.
Save yourself from extremes: When it is extremely cold your body and feet become prone to frost bite. Put on gloves on top of a pair of light mittens. Try shoes half size more than your usual so that you can wear thick socks. Wear a cap of a head band to cover your head as it is one body part that can catch cold very fast.
Wear Right: Choose clothing with reflection if it’s dark. Make sure your shoes have traction as they’d help you stay steady and prevent you from falling. Take a helmet while going for ski, snowboard or snowmobiling.
Sunscreen is a must have: You are prone to get sunburned in winters also. Make sure you apply a sunscreen lotion which blocks both UV (A and B) rays with a SPF of 15 or more. Apply lip balm which comes with sunscreen, protect your eyes as they might get affected with snow and glare of ice, make sure you carry goggles.
Go with the Wind: While ending your workout when you are sweaty try and take a route where the wind hits your back.
Keep yourself fuelled: Drink lots of water and sports drinks to keep yourself energised and hydrated.
Pay heed to the chilly wind: This might get really harmful and reach your body. If you are exercising in a fast motion you can make the wind chilly. Choose indoor activities if temperature is extremely chilly.
