What Liquid Diet Is All About
August 3, 2009
A liquid diet comprises either all fluid consumption or partial meal replacement. Fluid consumption includes juices and teas.
However, there are many types of fluid diet available that may not be advisable and good for heath for long term weight loss. But fluid diet is recommended especially following bariatric surgeries.
Bariatric Surgery and Liquid Diet
Many physicians and experts do not suggest a liquid diet unless and until and individual is to go through procedures which includes s sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. In preoperative cases, a liquid diet is beneficial in many ways such as it helps in flushing the bowels whilst reducing strain on digestive system. Recommended beverages include tea, sport drinks, broth and coffee. Some juices are also allowed, if strained first. Before undertaking liquid diet, consult a doctor as he will assist you by providing detail fact sheet on how to proceed and for how long should you continue this diet. A person who goes through bariatric surgery possibly would be required to follow a liquid diet for 8-10 days following the procedure.
Extreme Obesity and Liquid Diet
In many instances, excessive obesity is treated with all-fluid diet. This can of diet can be very useful and successful initially, but it should be continuously monitored by a doctor for any side-effects or negative effects. However, it is recommended not to continue all-fluid diet for longer period as this may cause weakness and dizziness. The major reason that drives weight loss in fluid diet is due to very less calorie consumption. If someone who wants to reduce some 10-20 pounds should not avoid liquid diet as these are meant for extremely obese people and for shorter period of time.
A fluid diet may not be sufficient to provide the required nutrients to maintain ample energy levels in most people. In short term weight loss can be achieved, but once out of the diet and back to original consumption pattern, pounds tend to be regained. Liquid diet also fails to provide sufficient amount of fibre and protein to our body. The replacement of food with liquid simply may not be practical in long-term for those who want to shed just a few pounds. Another hitch with liquid diet it tends to ignore the vital proteins, vitamins, fibres and other essential sources for good health. All liquid diet is however favourable to reduce a limited amount of weight for shorter period of time if used in combination with regular meal. Without portion control, liquid diet may fail as well.
