Weight Gain Leads to Depression
Weight Gain is a very serious health condition. The numerous side effects that weight gain can lead to is difficult to even imagine. One such side effect is depression.
Normally what happens with people who have gained a considerable amount of weight is that they begin eating more starchy and fatty foods just to console themselves that they are absolutely fine and there is nothing wrong with their health. Most over-weight and obese people start living life like an illusion, failing to accept reality of their health condition.
They do so just to gain some relief from the fact that their weight is increasing day by day. This is why depression is considered so dangerous. It affects the mental psyche of a person so badly that people affected begin to ignore the truth. Since most obese and overweight people are often ridiculed by others they become almost immune to the fact that their eating habits are causing great harm to their body. Often people fail to believe that depression can occur due to weight gain.
The reality is that depression does occur from weight gain. Obese people suffer from extremely high emotions of anger and jealousy. This mostly arrives on seeing others who are in great shape and have a lovely body to flaunt. Constant reminders from family and friends to do something about their weight gain problem only motivates them further to do the opposite. All this pent up emotion in them eventually leads to depression. And the saddest part is that there is no specific remedy for depression. It’s not like you eat one teaspoon of some syrup each day and then you will wake up feeling positive and great about the way you look.
Depression requires long-term healing. It is also important to note that the medication for depression leading out of weight gain will differ from one person to another. But medication and constant counseling are the only two ways of dealing with this problem. What good medication does to the person is that it increases the tryptophan and serotonin levels in the brain that reduces the craving for eating in them.
Most obese patients are also advised to have a low carbohydrate, low fat and low protein meal in the evening to reduce their craving and get back to leading a normal life. But more than medicines what can really help such people come out of depression is the strong support of their family.
They must encourage them and invoke positive feelings that would inspire them to stay healthy and happy like others. Food has a direct impact on a person’s mood. Hence if the person has no control over their cravings or eats unhealthy food then that is obviously going to affect their mood and behaviour.
Thus the best way to deal with depression arising out of weight gain for people would be to first acknowledge that they have a very serious problem that needs to be adhered to immediately. By acknowledging the problem the patient successfully crosses the first hurdle in their treatment process. And then of course with regular medication and counseling they will be all set to lead a very normal and healthy life.
