August 24, 2009
People across the world have become obsessed with weight loss and size zero, that they don’t realise that being under weight can lead to various health problems like hair loss, anaemia and even infertility.
People who are under and overweight need to take care of the calorie consumption. One to lose weight, the other to gain weight. The health hazards attached with being underweight are equally dangerous as that for being overweight.
A lot of research and study have been conducted on problems of people who are overweight (which is good) but this has neglected the problems faced by underweight people. The reasons why people lose weight or remain underweight can be stress, malnutrition, eating disorders, dental problems etc. Any adult with a BMI less than 18.5 is seen as underweight.
If you are underweight your immunity can go for a toss, as your body lacks essential nutrients and you would start feeling weak and tired very often. You will suffer from hair loss or hair growth in unwanted areas due to being malnourished.
If you are underweight, you have a higher risk of bone loss or osteoporosis. This condition makes your bones weak and brittle, this would increase your chances of broken bones or fracture. Women who have had their menopauses are more likely to suffer from this disease. When serious weight loss occurs due to purposeful reduction of food intake or illness tend to lose a lot of muscle mass.
If you are underweight, you are more prone to have pregnancy complications and have miscarriage especially in the first trimester. If you are underweight you can have anaemia, which might cause dizziness, fatigue etc. which is caused by iron deficiency.
You can also have menstrual irregularities if you are underweight, it can even cause amenorrhea, which stops menstrual flow.
Besides the ones mentioned being underweight can also cause heart irregularities, memory loss, digestion disease, cancer and even hypothermia.
It is equally important to tackle the problem of being underweight like it is for obese people. You can do that by an effective diet and exercise plan.
