Importance of Flexibility
You have had your cardio session on the machines along with your tiresome weight workout; you head straight to the shower as you are happy with what you have done.
Not yet I must tell you, did you invest time in cooling down and stretching the muscles you have worked on? If the answer is no then you should do that right away.
Advantages of stretching
Your cardio and weight program leave your muscle to flex and contract. This is when the power of stretching or flexibility comes in picture, how it can be useful, well in a couple of ways like:
Increase of Flexibility: If your muscles are flexible it wouldn’t only benefit your exercise but would be helpful in your daily routine as well.
It adds range of motion, if your motion is good it gives you balance, makes you more active and less prone to injuries.
It improves the flow of blood to your muscles which would help your injuries heal better.
It works as a stress reliever as it relaxes tensed muscles.
Now you know that stretching is extremely essential and critical.
Keep the following in mind when you stretch:
You need to target all you major muscle groups when you stretch like your thighs, hips, calves, lower and upper back, hands, neck, shoulder. Besides these remember to stretch the joints which are used regularly.
If you don’t warm yourself up properly you might hurt your selves if you stretch on cold muscles. Warm up yourself by walking, moving your hands, etc. for 5-10 minutes. It is best to stretch post workout.
Make sure you hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds before repeating it on the other side.
Don’t bounce as your stretch as this might leave you with tears of muscle and injury. The tear tends to tighten the affected muscle making you prone to pain and less flexible.
Your stretch should have general tension but no pain; if the muscle hurts you have probably stretched too far.
You need to relax your body and breathe deeply while stretching.
Make sure you stretch as often as you workout, if you don’t work out regularly, try and stretch.
Make sure to consult a physician if you suffer from any joint related problem or injury.
