How To Turn Exercise Into A Habit

October 23, 2009

“Doing what you preach” is not true when it comes to work out and exercise. Many people give loads of advice on importance of working out and fitness. But how many people out there can say they stick to their workout schedule and a regular with cardio, strength and flexibility training.

The first and foremost thing which many people avoid is that they should take up a workout schedule which they enjoy and which matches with their personality.

People who are introverts and those who hate mixing up with people should try solo workouts like yoga, swimming, jogging, strength training, etc. Swimming is great if you want to avoid talking to people as you wouldn’t get much of a chance to socialize under water.

If you are an extrovert you need to join a sports team or group workout. Your motivation and commitment to working out can go skyrocketing if you have a group to motivate yourself. Competition would also help you keep going, but a lot of competition would make others avoid you. You need to be welcoming to people around you and socialize without letting it affect your workout.

If you get motivated internally, that is on your own achievements then while in a group activity share your goals with others, and constantly discuss your progress; this way everyone around you would get motivated and you would also get motivated to push yourself more.

If you have joined a group for other benefits besides healthy benefits, you should go to the strength training are where you can flaunt yourself to the opposite sex and can get motivated by them.

You obviously need to be consistent and steady with your workout routine. This is obviously the toughest part of working out. You will have to assign a time to work out if you want commitment. If you have decided to take a workout break in the evening, make sure you leave from where you are at the point every day; whether or not you are exercising that particular day; this would help you form a habit; soon your family/colleagues will start expecting you leave at a time.

This would help you develop a positive reputation that you exercise, which would make you more consistent and committed. If one day you decide not to workout people around you would notice and everyone would ask you if you aren’t leaving for your gym/jog/swimming. This would put a burden on you that you need to maintain a reputation and you would force yourself to workout.
