How Good Are Artificial Sweeteners

We are all aware that consuming large amount of sugar is not good for your health. They pile up extra calories and don’t have any nutritional benefits (thanks to the rage that wealth-loss and health has created globally).

If your diet already is high on calories, taking in empty calories in form of sugar, will harm your body further.  Many people are choosing low-calorie artificial sweeteners over sugar to do away with empty calories they consume in form of sugar.

What are low-calorie/artificial sweeteners?

These are natural compounds or at times chemicals which provide sweet taste-like sugar, minus the calories. They provide the sweetness of sugar and are used in lesser quantity (one tsp of sweetener is sweeter than 1 tsp of sugar). So obviously, because of these benefits; they are chosen by people who want to loose weight. Artificial sweeteners are also used by diabetic patients to manage blood sugar.

Artificial sweeteners have been approved for use in many kind of food. Artificial sweeteners can be found in Aspartame, Saccharin, Acesulfame K & Sucralose, there is a recommended level beyond which you shouldn’t consume for each of them.

Many people/reports believe that artificial sweeteners has many bad effects on health, the most dangerous being cancer. There has been research to find proof of the statement but they haven’t found any scientific evidence to prove that these sweeteners can lead to a deadly disease like cancer. Many studies also go to prove that low-cal sweeteners are safe and don’t have any health problems attached to them.

Another study reveals that artificial sweeteners may make weight loss harder. As sweetener mess with brain sending signals to raise our metabolism looking forward to get calories which the body won’t get. This research again doesn’t have enough evidence to support it.

Calories are still empty:

If you have a sweet-tooth and are too fond of eating cookies and chocolates, just removing sugar from this sweet stuff won’t remove all the calories. You may still end up eating more calories than you actually need, avoiding healthy and nutritious stuff.  The drinks or deserts which contain low-calorie sweeteners aren’t too high as far as their nutritional content is concerned.
