1. Figure out the amount of calories you need: It’s very important to know that what the amount of calories your body requires. The intake of calories differs from person to person and it’s generally depends upon the weight and the amount of exercise undertaken.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is a good way to calculate the calorie needs. It is based on a simple formula i.e. BMR [Kcal] = Weight [in lbs] * 15 + (moderate activity [minutes/day] * 3.5). The amount of calories you need to take in order to lose weight is BMR-500 Kcal.
For example: Your weight is 150 lb and you perform 25 minutes of moderate activity daily. So in this case BMR = (150*15) + (25*3.5) =2337.5 Kcal. BMR minus 500Kcal, it will be 2337.5 – 500 =1837.5. There fore you 1837.5 Kcal should be your target to shed 1lb/week.
2. Never skip meals: Skipping meal to lose weight is a bad idea. Never skip you meals. In fact, having small and frequent meal helps in balancing the sugar level and also helps in balancing your calories intake throughout the day. Try to eat 5-6 smaller meals instead of having 3 big meals.
3. Portion size: One serving of pasta is half cup of cooked pasta. But when you order a dish of pasta in any restaurant, the serving size is almost equal to 3-4 cups of pasta. You don’t have to finish it all. Have a smaller quantity and you can take the leftover back home.
4. Opt for wholesome foods: Always but fresh foods and try to avoid packaged and fast food. Convenient and packaged foods are in higher side of fat and sodium content. You can actually lose several pounds in long team if you will avoid packaged foods and adopt fresh foods.
5. Understand food labels and claims: Any product labeled as carrying less amount of carbs or sugar doesn’t mean it’s calorie content is low. Similarly, a product labeled as fat free may not be low in calories. Make it a habit to read the nutrition label on the packaging.
6. Opt for healthy drink or even just water: If possible, reduce the intake of sugary drinks such as colas, tea, ice-cream and pops. Replace it be 10-12 glasses of water. Water will help in cleaning your body and will also keep you away from dehydration.
7. Regular exercise: No diet plans will work wonder unless and until supplemented by regular exercise. A good 30-60 minutes of exercise will help you to burn more calories, maintain blood pressure, make your heart healthier, and will burn more calories.
