Does Alcohol Lead To Increase In Weight Gain

Most of us will be expecting a resounding yes for this answer. But researches have shown in the past that drinking alcohol does not lead to  weight gain.

Surprised? It is true that alcohol contains calories but drinking alcohol does not increase the weight of a person. Good news for people who drink on a regular basis. Alcohol may not lead to weight gain but it is certainly not considered good for health.

Alcohol does not include sugar in it. It is myth that alcohol contains sugar. What happens on consumption of alcohol is that the liver does not alter alcohol into sugar as most people assume it to be. The liver actually breaks down alcohol into a substance called acetate which is further broken down into carbon dioxide and water.

Another very interesting fact is that non-alcohol drinks are said to have more calories than alcoholic beverages. Some non-alcoholic beverages are even double in calories than the alcoholic drinks. If you are still not convinced that alcohol does not lead to weight gain then here is an explanation that will help clearing all your doubts.

Alcohol is made from a process called fermentation and distillation where alcohol is made from high carbohydrate fermentables like sugar, potatoes and different kinds of grains. And the end result of the process of fermentation and distillation is a liquid called alcohol which is zero in calories. Alcoholic beverages have no calories because they are distilled products unlike wine which has some amount of calories in it. In fact researches have even shown that consumption of alcohol in women can actually lead to weight loss.

Now this does not mean that non-alcoholics should start drinking alcohol as it does not lead to weight gain. The bottom line is that everything should be done in moderation. One cannot afford to drink too much alcohol and still remain healthy. The right way of ensuring that one stays healthy and fit is by eating and drinking right at the right time and exercising.
