Are Soy And Its Products Healthy
We have all heard a great deal about soy and its products, we have been told that it is extremely healthy, low on calories and fat. Once you try soy you would be able to realize what health benefits it offers. Some research and studies on the other hand show that soy is not as healthy as it is made out to be.
Soy and its products are seen as an excellent source of protein and can be found in various forms and tastes like milk, tofu, cheese, burgers, chips, tacos etc. If you are looking for an alternative for milk and meat products; soy products can come to your rescue. There are no two thoughts about the health benefits of soy. They are high in its protein content, besides being rich in vitamins A, B & B1. Soy is also good source of fibre and minerals.
If you compare soy milk with cow’s milk, the soy version contains higher complex carbs, hence this makes Soy drinks a better option for people suffering from diabetes as it wouldn’t stimulate levels of blood sugar which happen in the case of cow’s milk. Soy milk is also low in calories and fat content vis-a-vie cow’s milk, soy milk is also very low on unsaturated fat. The cholesterol levels of soy milk are almost zilch.
Soy milk also contains isoflavones, which would help you alleviate any symptoms of menopause; it will also avert the risk of cancer; it slows osteoporosis and will help reduce risks related to heart disease.
When we look at so many health benefits of soy, we should also be aware of the health risks attached to it. Soy products have phytic acid which might block protein absorption in one’s body, besides other nutrients like iron, magnesium, zinc and calcium. Soy also tends to increase the risk of thyroid. Soy might also be linked with breast cancer as is suggested by some research.
Hence it is a fact that soy and soy products do come up with a lot of health benefits but the negative effects of soy can’t be overlooked.
