Anorexia – A Serious Threat to Health

If obesity is considered a serious health concern, then ‘Anorexia’ too cannot be ignored. Anorexia refers to a condition of extreme weight loss.

This condition is usually found in young girls who are obsessed about looking slim and thin. Their obsession results in the medical condition called anorexia. Anorexics suffer from the misconception that they are overweight. Hence such people mostly resort to not eating any meals, or using laxatives or exercising excessively.

As mentioned earlier, most anorexics fear that they will become extremely fat and thus completely devoid themselves of food to remain thin. The symptoms of anorexia are differing body weight, poor skin, fatigue, stress, anxiety, difficulty in breathing etc. Some anorexics even refuse to eat in public as they suffer from the fear that people may look down upon them or laugh at them for eating so much.

But in reality it’s all in their mind. It is important that parents whose children suffer from this dangerous form of disease not only empathize with their condition but also provide them with support and motivate them to get rid of their dreaded state.

If not checked and treated on time anorexics can suffer from different kinds of diseases ranging from osteoporosis, poor or irregular heartbeat, poor condition of bones, low body temperature and so on. The best way to deal with this problem is to raise more awareness about it. People only think that gaining more weight is a problem and that there is no harm if a person wants to look and remain thin forever.

With right kind of awareness about the disease, symptoms and how it can be overcome, many young girls can be saved from falling into the trap of losing control over their health completely. Taking the help of a physician is the first step towards ensuring that your child is safe.
